Researchers at The Ohio State University have developed a low-cost, active hyperspectral imaging system that can perform precise spectral analysis even in dark or low-light environments — a capability previously unattainable by conventional hyperspectral cameras.

Traditional hyperspectral imaging relies on passive light collection, depending on sunlight or ambient illumination to analyze an object’s spectral characteristics. This new system, led by Yang Tang, Shuang Song, Shengxi Gui, Weilun Chao, Chinmin Cheng, and Prof. Rongjun Qin, introduces an active design that uses synchronized LED light sources emitting single-wavelength illumination at 19 distinct frequencies. The prototype integrates this programmable LED array with a full-spectrum camera, allowing it to capture highly detailed hyperspectral data across both visible and infrared ranges.

“Our prototype demonstrates that accurate spectral imaging can be achieved in complete darkness, using only low-cost, off-the-shelf components,” said lead author Yang Tang. “It opens new possibilities for applications in geochemistry, underground exploration, and precision agriculture.”

In a surprising twist to the growing ransomware crisis, an unlikely beneficiary has emerged from the chaos: the average American consumer. Across the United States and Europe, hundreds of class-action lawsuits have been launched in the aftermath of major data leaks. Law firms, corporate watchdogs, and even government agencies are closely monitoring the blog of Qilin, one of the world’s most active ransomware groups, to get first access to leaked information. For many everyday citizens, this has resulted in multi-million-dollar settlements—while corporations face staggering financial losses.

Following the decline or disappearance of rival ransomware groups, Qilin has emerged as a dominant force in the Ransomware-as-a-Service (RaaS) ecosystem. Their blog, hosted on the dark web, now contains over 800 posts detailing successful breaches—mostly targeting companies in the U.S. and European Union. Qilin claims it does not operate in the CIS or BRICS countries, focusing instead on Western targets. Some estimates suggest the group may have conducted thousands of attacks to date.

Qilin’s leaks have created a new legal marketplace. Law firms scour the group’s blog daily, analyzing data dumps and identifying potential victims. Attorneys then cold-call affected individuals and former employees, inviting them to join lawsuits against breached companies. In some cases, as many as five law firms compete simultaneously to build cases from a single leak. Legal representatives have even contacted Qilin directly for confirmation of specific data breaches.

Adding another layer of complexity, Qilin itself maintains what appears to be a legal department. According to messages on their blog, this internal team reportedly notifies government agencies about regulatory violations discovered in stolen data—amplifying pressure on targeted companies.

Far from a disorganized criminal gang, Qilin operates more like a corporation. The group offers a full suite of services beyond just encryption tools. Their organizational chart seems to include data analysts, negotiators, DDoS operators, storage managers, and even journalists. Legal staff pore over leaked files to identify violations or potential crimes, which are then turned into exposés by their in-house writers. Negotiators reportedly contact C-level executives to discuss terms, while infrastructure specialists assist in system recovery.

Ransom payments are sent to an affiliate’s wallet, with Qilin taking a cut. In return, the group supplies decryptors, provides guidance for restoring IT systems, and offers post-attack cybersecurity recommendations. It’s no longer just extortion—it’s a fully developed ecosystem that experts believe involves hundreds of people worldwide. Ransom payments typically range from $100,000 to several million dollars, though cases exceeding $10 million are not uncommon.

Ironically, companies that refuse to pay the ransom often suffer even greater losses. A notable example is Lee Enterprises, a U.S. media group that declined to negotiate with Qilin. After data belonging to 40,000 individuals was leaked online, a wave of lawsuits followed. The company has already paid out $9.5 million in settlements, with total damages potentially reaching into the tens of millions. For law firms, these cases are gold mines—plaintiffs have clear evidence, defendants are cornered, and payouts are substantial.

Inadvertently, Qilin has become a reliable source of actionable legal cases. Their leaks serve as hard evidence for lawsuits, making them unusually lucrative and easy to win. As legal professionals grow increasingly reliant on these data troves, the ransomware group is, in effect, laying golden eggs for the legal industry. 

What’s more, Qilin appears to be strategically using lawsuits as an additional pressure tactic. In some instances, the group has reportedly contacted victims directly, alerting them to the data breach and offering assistance in building a legal case.

Titled Cosmos Archaeology – Explorations in Time and Space, the ongoing exhibition transforms the nation’s leading museum into a gateway to the stars, integrating China’s illustrious history with the boundless poetry of the universe.

Stepping into Cosmos Archaeology – Explorations in Time and Space feels like crossing the threshold into a cosmic temple. The exhibition – jointly organized by the Embassy of Switzerland in China, the National Museum of China (NMC), and Switzerland’s EPFL (École Polytechnique Fédérale de Lausanne), with support from Tsinghua University’s departments of astronomy and art – was officially unveiled in Beijing on July 2, 2025. It marks the first Swiss-led exhibition at the new NMC and a highlight of the 75th anniversary of Swiss-Chinese diplomatic relations, symbolizing deepening cultural and scientific cooperation between the two nations. As visitors wander through the museum’s vast galleries, they start on an immersive voyage that bridges innovation and imagination, science and art, all under the roof of China’s most venerated museum.

Among the exhibition’s international array of artworks, one installation invites visitors not just to look, but to listen. Well-known product designer Yiyun Qiu’s Cosmusica, a highlight of the show, is described as an interactive “art satellite” that transforms real-time space data into music. In this poetic creation, electromagnetic waves captured from distant celestial bodies – normally silent to our ears – are translated into an ever-evolving symphony of sound. Now back on Earth within the museum, it invites the public to share in that experience: to press an ear to the universe and sense our planet’s small but meaningful part in a grand cosmic chorus. Qiu, an award-winning Chinese artist and designer, drew on both her scientific curiosity and her cultural imagination to create Cosmusica. By uniting aerospace technology with art, she offers a piece that is at once a scientific instrument and a dreamscape of sound. Visitors often pause in reverent silence, eyes closed, as the ambient tones from distant galaxies wash over them. In these moments, the bustling museum gallery fades into a starry expanse of sonic wonder.

Reflecting on what she hopes people take away from the exhibition, Ms. Qiu shares a thought filled with humility and awe. “The cosmos has a silent music of its own, and I dream that we might tune our hearts to it,” she says softly, standing beside her work’s gentle glow. “Through this exhibition, I hope each person can pause to listen and feel a profound connection – as if, in the vast darkness of space, we find a shared light of wonder here on Earth.” Her words capture the spirit that Cosmos Archaeology instills: a sense that art can be our antenna, extending our senses into the universe and returning with messages of inspiration.

In contemporary tattoo art, the question of artistic maturity has become increasingly significant as an indicator of professional and authorial development. Unlike formal technical proficiency or manual skill, artistic maturity represents a complex qualitative characteristic that includes conscious artistic decision-making, the stability of an authorial visual language, and the capacity for long-term artistic thinking. Within this framework, tattoo art may be examined as a form of artistic practice possessing its own stages of development and criteria of maturity.

This study explores artistic maturity in tattoo art through the lens of practice-based research, in which the artist’s practical experience functions as a primary source of theoretical knowledge. Artistic maturity is understood here not as an age- or tenure-related category, but as the outcome of accumulated visual, corporeal, and conceptual experience.

One of the central indicators of artistic maturity is the transformation of compositional thinking. In early stages of tattoo practice, compositional decisions are often fragmented and oriented toward immediate visual impact. As professional development progresses, composition becomes increasingly integrated with bodily form, accounting for anatomy, movement, and temporal transformation. This shift reflects a transition from localized decision-making to a systemic artistic approach.

Another essential component of artistic maturity is the formation of an authorial visual language. A mature tattoo artist demonstrates stylistic consistency while retaining the capacity for adaptation and conceptual growth. Authorial style ceases to function as a collection of external techniques and instead becomes a mode of thinking, expressed through the handling of form, color, and bodily space.

Practice-oriented analysis further indicates that artistic maturity involves a fundamental change in the perception of the body as an artistic medium. Rather than being treated as a neutral surface, the body is understood as an active co-author of the image. Mature tattoo practice is characterized by a dialogical relationship between artist and bodily form, in which artistic decisions are shaped by the individual physical and experiential characteristics of the wearer.

Temporal awareness constitutes another defining feature of artistic maturity. Mature artistic practice incorporates the ability to anticipate the long-term transformation of tattoo imagery over time. Healing processes, aging of the skin, and changes in bodily structure are integrated into compositional and chromatic decision-making. This distinguishes artistically mature practice from approaches oriented toward short-term visual effect or transient stylistic trends.

The psychological dimension also plays a significant role. A mature tattoo artist recognizes the responsibility inherent in intervening in a person’s bodily identity. This awareness manifests in deeper engagement with client motivation, symbolic content, and contextual placement of the image. Artistic maturity thus entails ethical as well as aesthetic accountability.

To systematize the characteristics of artistic maturity in tattoo art, the study presents the following comparative analytical framework.
